As you head towards your 50's you should start to think about using your bow more often. You are still a meleer, but you should bear in mind that in the not so distant future, your bow will be your closest ally. You also need to ensure your tracking is close to being maxxed out. A haste item also becomes vital as you reach the higher levels, to speed up your attacks. Once you reach 60/65 however, your melee attacks will start to overtake your bow damage. The reason for this is because you get triple attack and may have started to get some melee offensive AA's. Personally I still use my bow depending upon the situation. In a group I melee unless a mob is being kited. In raids I will generally also melee, but perhaps on the odd occassion I will use my bow if my trueshot discipline is up. It is nice to be versatile at times! There are different paths you can take with your AA's but the melee path is considered the one where you create most damage. See the AA link below for more information.
When purchasing new new weapons, I tended to avoid ones with procs (for example a sword that casts a damage spell randomly). When fighting, procs tend to gain mob attention, which as a ranger you may wish to avoid when grouped. If you are soloing, then ofcourse this won't matter.
Concentrate on keeping all your melee skills up, including 2hs, pierce, 1hb and 2hb. As you reach the higher level zones, you will be glad that you will have the option to use more than your trusty one handed sword, especially if you raid and see some nice weapon drops!
